What is BodyTalk System?
The BodyTalk System is a holistic therapy that focuses on restoring the body’s natural ability to heal by improving communication within the body-mind complex, combining principles from Western medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine, energy healing, neuroscience, and quantum physics. Unlike symptom-focused interventions, BodyTalk considers emotional, physical, and environmental influences in order to address the underlying cause of conditions, using various techniques to activate the brain, restructure the body’s energetic patterns, and promote healing from within. The approach is sometimes described as acupuncture without needles.
Practitioners use muscle checking (similar to applied kinesiology) to communicate with the body’s innate intelligence and determine treatment priorities. A signature feature is gentle tapping: tapping the head focuses the brain’s attention on areas that need repair, while tapping the heart stores changes in cellular memory. The system rests on the premise that health is maintained by the synchronized communication of the body’s physical, emotional, mental, and energetic systems, and when this communication breaks down due to stress, trauma, or imbalance, illness and dysfunction may arise.
Origins & Lineage
The BodyTalk System was developed in the 1990s by Dr. John Veltheim, an Australian chiropractor, acupuncturist, and teacher. He began his healthcare career in 1973 in Australia and served as Principal of the Brisbane College of Acupuncture and Natural Therapies for five years. He made an in-depth study of chiropractic, osteopathy, sports medicine, acupuncture and Chinese medicine, naturopathy, Bio-energetic therapy, Applied Kinesiology and many variations of energy medicine.
Veltheim suddenly collapsed, was hospitalized and given just days to live after contracting the Epstein Barr virus with severe liver damage. Refusing to give up, he checked himself out of the hospital and proceeded to treat himself with Chinese herbs, acupuncture, and meditation, and soon recovered. He stumbled across Tracy Livingston, an osteopath from New Zealand, who was able to treat the virus successfully using a method that John then researched and developed further, giving the foundations for the BodyTalk system.
In 1998, as his health began to improve, Veltheim moved to Sarasota, Florida to further establish his developing practice. In 2000, Dr. John Veltheim and his wife Esther Veltheim founded the International BodyTalk Association. Dr Veltheim passed away in Florida USA on 11 November 2022.
How It’s Practiced
A BodyTalk session typically lasts 45 minutes. BodyTalk may be performed on you lying down on a massage table or seated on a chair. Once comfortable, the practitioner will assess your health through muscle testing, and as soon as they have detected the problem areas in your internal communication lines, they will start performing a light tapping technique on your head and chest to stimulate your body’s natural healing ability.
BodyTalk uses a standardized protocol and procedure that guides practitioners in identifying priority areas of imbalance, ensuring sessions are personalized and systematic. Practitioners use a form of muscle checking to ask yes-or-no questions of the body’s innate wisdom. The Protocol chart includes treatment techniques for balancing organs, endocrine glands, parts of the brain, acupuncture meridians, chakras, emotional memories, environmental factors, and more.
Tapping, breathing, and other forms of touch are used to stimulate the brain to employ natural healing procedures. Sessions can be conducted in person or remotely. Distance sessions are as effective as in person sessions because we each have a unique frequency, and practitioners are trained to tune into your frequency; as quantum physics and consciousness-based modalities have found, we are all connected on a mind-level.
BodyTalk System Today
Today, the BodyTalk System is practiced by over 200 instructors in over 50 countries around the world. The IBA represents the interests of over 3000 members with ongoing support, educational development, awareness, and building recognition from regulating bodies. Training courses are available in multiple languages including German, Portuguese, and Japanese.
Seekers encounter BodyTalk through certified practitioners in private practice, wellness centers, and integrative clinics. BodyTalk professionals developed an adapted version called BodyTalk Access, which teaches individuals, groups, and organizations a simple set of energy-based techniques to promote self-healing that can be used at home, school, or work. The Fundamentals course is the starting place for professional training, while BodyTalk Access offers layperson techniques for family wellness.
Common Misconceptions
BodyTalk is not a replacement for emergency medical care or conventional diagnosis. It does not involve physical manipulation, acupuncture needles, or supplements. There are no prescriptions, side effects, or physical manipulations involved. While often compared to energy medicine, BodyTalk is not just another form of energy medicine—the fundamental paradigm of the BodyTalk system is Consciousness based.
BodyTalk does not guarantee specific outcomes and is not a diagnostic system in the conventional sense. While more research is needed to fully understand the benefits, many practitioners and clients have reported positive results. A published study showed significant improvements in pain, anxiety, and social satisfaction, though research remains limited compared to established medical interventions.
Practitioners are trained to work within the body’s own priorities rather than imposing a treatment agenda. The system is highly individualized—no two sessions follow the same sequence.
How to Begin
To experience BodyTalk, locate a Certified BodyTalk Practitioner (CBP) through the International BodyTalk Association directory at bodytalksystem.com. Many practitioners offer introductory sessions both in-person and remotely. Before booking, inquire about the practitioner’s training level and areas of focus.
For self-study, the BodyTalk Access course is designed for individuals without prior healthcare training. This one-day workshop teaches five basic techniques including the Cortices (brain balancing), body chemistry balancing, and reciprocal muscle pairs.
For professional study, BodyTalk Fundamentals is a multi-day course open to anyone regardless of background. The way the BodyTalk System is designed, anyone without any prior background can learn and still achieve good results, and the human biology knowledge that is required is taught in the beginning of the course. Advanced courses explore consciousness work, environmental influences, family dynamics, and specialized applications.
