Maharishi Mahesh Yogi

Indian guru (1918–2008) who founded Transcendental Meditation and brought Vedic meditation techniques to global prominence through systematic teaching methods.

What is Maharishi Mahesh Yogi?

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi (born Mahesh Prasad Varma, 1918–2008) was an Indian spiritual teacher who developed and systematized Transcendental Meditation ™, a specific form of mantra-based meditation derived from Hindu Vedantic traditions. He trained tens of thousands of teachers and established a global network of educational institutions, research centers, and meditation facilities spanning six decades. His approach emphasized scientific validation of meditation’s physiological effects and presented Vedic knowledge through secular frameworks accessible to Western audiences.

Origins & Lineage

Born in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, India, Mahesh Prasad Varma studied physics at Allahabad University before becoming a disciple of Swami Brahmananda Saraswati (1868–1953), known as Guru Dev, who served as Shankaracharya of Jyotir Math from 1941 until his death. Maharishi spent thirteen years with Guru Dev, studying Vedanta philosophy and meditation techniques within the Shankaracharya tradition, one of four monastic seats established by Adi Shankara in the 8th century.

After Guru Dev’s death in 1953, Maharishi spent two years in silence in Uttarkashi in the Himalayas before emerging in 1955 to begin teaching. He initially called his method the “Spiritual Regeneration Movement” and traveled throughout India before making his first world tour in 1958. By 1959, he had established the Transcendental Meditation movement in the United States, followed by centers in Europe and Asia.

The name “Maharishi” (great seer) was adopted by his students during the 1960s, though he was previously known simply as Maharesh or Mahesh Yogi. Unlike traditional Hindu gurus who accepted only select disciples, Maharishi created a standardized training protocol that allowed TM to be taught by certified instructors following a uniform curriculum.

How It’s Practiced

Maharishi’s teachings center on Transcendental Meditation, a technique distinct from mindfulness or concentration practices. Students receive instruction through a standardized seven-step course, including personal interviews, introductory lectures, and a private initiation ceremony (puja) during which an instructor assigns an individual mantra—a specific sound from Vedic tradition selected according to the student’s age and gender.

Practitioners sit comfortably with eyes closed for 20 minutes twice daily, silently repeating their mantra without concentration or contemplation. Maharishi described the process as “effortless” transcending, where the mind settles from active thinking to increasingly subtle states until reaching transcendental consciousness—a state of restful alertness without mental content. The technique requires no lifestyle changes, dietary restrictions, or belief systems.

Maharishi also taught advanced programs including the TM-Sidhi program (introduced 1976), which includes yogic flying (a hopping meditation practice), and promoted Ayurvedic medicine, Vedic architecture (Vastu Shastra), and Vedic astrology (Jyotish) as components of a comprehensive “Vedic Science.”

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Today

Maharishi’s influence persists through organizational structures established during his lifetime. The primary vehicle is the Maharishi Foundation, which oversees TM instruction worldwide through certified teachers who complete months-long residential training courses. Maharishi International University (now Maharishi University of Management) in Fairfield, Iowa, founded in 1971, offers undergraduate and graduate degrees while incorporating TM practice into daily schedules.

Thousands of peer-reviewed studies examining TM’s effects on stress, cardiovascular health, and brain function continue to be published, maintaining Maharishi’s emphasis on scientific legitimacy. The David Lynch Foundation, established in 2005, funds TM instruction for at-risk populations including veterans, prisoners, and students in underserved schools, extending Maharishi’s reach beyond spiritual seekers to institutional settings.

Maharishi’s later projects—including attempts to purchase countries for “ideal societies,” establishing the Global Country of World Peace in 2000, and promoting large-group meditations to reduce violence—remain active among core followers but occupy a smaller public profile than introductory TM courses.

Common Misconceptions

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi is not interchangeable with generic “meditation teachers.” His technique follows specific protocols; instructors who deviate from his methodology or teach similar mantra-based practices without TM certification are not teaching “Transcendental Meditation” as he defined it.

The Beatles’ 1968 visit to his ashram in Rishikesh brought international attention, but their subsequent departure amid controversy (allegations of inappropriate behavior toward a female participant, which Maharishi denied) complicated his public image. This incident is often reduced to either hagiography or scandal; historical accounts remain contested, with participants offering conflicting narratives.

TM is not free nor “just repeating a word.” The standardized course requires payment (typically $960–$2,000 for adults as of the 2020s, with reduced rates for students and families), justified by proponents as necessary for teacher training and organizational support. Critics note this contradicts traditional guru-disciple models where teachings were given freely or through voluntary donation.

Maharishi’s teachings derive from Hindu Vedantic philosophy, specifically Advaita (non-dual) Vedanta, though TM organizations present the practice as secular and scientifically validated. This tension between religious origins and secular presentation has generated legal challenges, particularly regarding TM instruction in public schools.

How to Begin

Interested individuals must locate a certified TM teacher through the official Maharishi Foundation website (tm.org). The organization prohibits teaching TM through books, apps, or videos, maintaining that personal instruction is essential. The seven-step course spans four consecutive days: two introductory lectures (optional but recommended), a private initiation, and three follow-up sessions for refinement and verification.

Maharishi’s own writings include The Science of Being and Art of Living (1963) and Bhagavad-Gita: A New Translation and Commentary (1967), which contextualize TM within Vedantic philosophy. These texts are not required reading for practice but provide theoretical foundations.

For those exploring Maharishi’s broader Vedic science, Maharishi University of Management offers online courses and residential programs. The extensive video archive of Maharishi’s lectures, spanning from the 1960s through 2008, is available through TM organization channels, documenting his teaching evolution across five decades.
