PSYCH-K

PSYCH-K is a subconscious belief-change process originated in 1988 by Robert M. Williams, combining muscle testing with whole-brain integration techniques.

What is PSYCH-K?

PSYCH-K (Psychological Kinesiology) is a belief-change methodology designed to identify and reprogram subconscious beliefs through a combination of muscle testing and physical processes called “balances.” Originated in 1988, PSYCH-K® is a simple and direct way to change self-limiting beliefs at the subconscious level of the mind, where nearly all human behavior originates, both constructive and destructive. The method operates on the premise that subconscious beliefs—which neuroscience research suggests constitute approximately 95% of consciousness—shape behaviors, perceptions, and life outcomes more powerfully than conscious intentions or willpower.

Unlike insight-based therapies that rely on analysis and motivation, PSYCH-K uses muscle testing (kinesiology) to communicate directly with the subconscious mind and employs specific postures and movements to create what practitioners call a “whole-brain state”—bilateral communication between the left and right cerebral hemispheres. A PSYCH-K® Balance is a process designed to create balanced communication between both hemispheres of the cerebral cortex. This “Whole-Brain State” is ideal for reprogramming the subconscious mind with new self-enhancing beliefs that support your goals rather than block them!

The system is taught through standardized workshops worldwide and has been endorsed by cell biologist Bruce Lipton, author of The Biology of Belief, who has stated that PSYCH-K changed his life and integrates it into his work on epigenetics and consciousness.

Origins & Lineage

PSYCH-K® was originated by Robert M. Williams in Denver, Colorado in December 1988/early 1989. Rob Williams has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Philosophy from the University of California at Los Angeles and a Masters Degree in Counseling and Personal Services from the University of Colorado. Before developing PSYCH-K, Rob Williams was a former corporate executive who tired of the corporate life. For the first 14 years of his career, Mr. Williams held management positions in the backpacking, energy management and telecommunications industries.

After experiencing a spiritual awakening during this time, he decided to move out of the corporate business environment and into a life of service as a professional psychotherapist. Rob found the accepted counseling philosophy of the day lacking in spiritual essence and overall effectiveness. Finding the accepted counseling philosophy of the day lacking in spiritual essence and overall effectiveness, he studied many non-standard modalities for change, both ancient and contemporary.

PSYCH-K® was originated in 1988 by Robert M. Williams, M.A. It was a response to the frustration that came with the realization that typical counseling techniques, which rely almost exclusively on “insight” and “motivation,” proved insufficient for producing rapid, measurable change. Williams synthesized principles from split-brain research, kinesiology, neurolinguistic programming, and spiritual traditions into a system he received, as he describes it, through intuitive insight.

Williams authored PSYCH-K… The Missing Piece/Peace In Your Life! and co-facilitated workshops with Bruce Lipton. Robert M. Williams M.A. October 15, 1946 – October 03, 2024 Originator of PSYCH-K® and author of PSYCH-K®…The Missing Piece/Peace in Your Life! Following Williams’ death in 2024, the method continues to be taught by a global network of certified instructors.

How It’s Practiced

PSYCH-K sessions center on “balances”—specific protocols combining muscle testing, affirmations, and physical postures. PSYCH-K® is a process that is carried out through exercises, called balances, which allow you to change subconscious beliefs. These balances can be applied to oneself or to other people, for personal or professional purposes.

A typical session begins with identifying a limiting belief through conversation, then using muscle testing—an applied kinesiology technique where the practitioner applies gentle pressure to an extended arm while the client focuses on a statement—to confirm subconscious resistance. First, we muscle test to connect with your subconscious and test the Belief or Perception in question. Muscle testing provides true or false and positive or negative responses.

Once a limiting belief is identified, the facilitator guides the client through a balance. This balance process typically involves specific postures, movements, and affirmations that work together to create a whole-brain state, where both hemispheres of the brain are in alignment. Common balances include cross-lateral body positions (e.g., crossing one ankle over the other while holding opposite wrists) held while the client mentally rehearses the new, desired belief. The process is repeated until muscle testing indicates the belief has been integrated.

A key distinction between PSYCH-K and other techniques is the permission protocols. Many forms of therapy and self help work on trying to fix a problem in your life without considering the possibility that the issue or problem may be cleverly disguised as an opportunity for some important learning. Practitioners seek permission from what is termed the “superconscious” or “higher self” before proceeding with belief changes.

Sessions typically last 60–90 minutes and may be conducted in-person or remotely. Clients remain fully conscious throughout; no hypnosis or trance states are involved.

PSYCH-K Today

PSYCH-K® is taught world-wide by Certified PSYCH-K® Instructors. The primary entry point is the Basic Workshop—a three-day in-person or online training where participants learn self-muscle testing and foundational balances. Here’s what you will learn in the PSYCH-K® Basic workshop: How to communicate with the subconscious mind, using a unique Muscle Testing protocol. Learn both Self-Muscle Testing for on-going personal transformation and learn how to Muscle Test with others directly in-person.

Advanced offerings include the Advanced Integration Workshop, Master Facilitation Workshop, Health and Wellbeing Program, and Divine Integration Retreat. The PSYCH-K® BASIC In-Person Workshop is the prerequisite for ALL the PSYCH-K® In-Person workshops: the Advanced Workshop, Master Facilitation Workshop, Health and Wellbeing Workshop, and the Divine Integration Retreat. Certification as a PSYCH-K instructor requires completion of all levels, sponsorship of workshops, and a six-day instructor training.

PSYCH-K is used by individuals for personal development and by practitioners in coaching, therapy, and wellness contexts. It is often positioned alongside modalities like Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), NeuroLinguistic Programming (NLP), and Theta Healing as part of the “energy psychology” field. Bruce Lipton’s endorsement has significantly expanded its visibility within epigenetics and mind-body medicine communities.

Common Misconceptions

PSYCH-K is not psychotherapy, and facilitators are not required to hold mental health licenses. While PSYCH-K® is essentially a spiritual process with psychological and physical benefits, it does not treat diagnosed mental illness, and practitioners emphasize it is not a substitute for medical or psychiatric care.

The method’s theoretical foundation—brain dominance theory and the claim that bilateral brain integration creates optimal conditions for subconscious reprogramming—is not supported by mainstream neuroscience. While split-brain research by Roger Sperry and Michael Gazzaniga established that the hemispheres have specialized functions, contemporary neuroscience views the brain as highly integrated, and the notion that specific postures can “synchronize” hemispheres to reprogram beliefs lacks empirical validation.

Muscle testing itself remains controversial. Though used widely in applied kinesiology, chiropractic, and alternative medicine, controlled studies have found it unreliable as a diagnostic tool, with results often influenced by ideomotor responses—unconscious muscular movements triggered by expectation rather than genuine subconscious communication.

PSYCH-K does not promise cures or guaranteed outcomes. While anecdotal testimonials describe rapid shifts in beliefs, stress, and behavior, peer-reviewed research on PSYCH-K’s efficacy is limited. The method’s effectiveness likely derives from a combination of placebo, focused intention, embodied cognition, and the therapeutic relationship rather than from the specific mechanisms proposed.

Finally, PSYCH-K is not a lineage-based spiritual tradition. Williams described its development as a series of intuitive insights rather than transmission from a teacher or system. Its eclecticism—drawing from neuroscience, kinesiology, and spiritual language—positions it as a contemporary self-help modality rather than an ancient practice.

How to Begin

Those new to PSYCH-K typically start with Williams’ book PSYCH-K… The Missing Piece/Peace In Your Life!, available widely in print and digital formats. The book PSYCH-K… The Missing Piece/Peace In Your Life! is a companion to the PSYCH-K experiential workshops. It is not an instruction book for learning PSYCH-K, however it will give you a new understanding about the process of change and provides the foundational philosophy and science behind this revolutionary process.

To learn the technique, attend a three-day Basic Workshop taught by a certified instructor. Workshops are offered globally in multiple languages and time zones, both in-person and online. The PSYCH-K Centre International website maintains a directory of certified instructors and upcoming workshop dates.

Another option is to schedule a private session with a certified facilitator to experience the process firsthand before committing to training. Sessions provide insight into how balances work and whether the method resonates.

For those interested in Bruce Lipton’s scientific perspective, his YouTube lecture series and his book The Biology of Belief contextualize PSYCH-K within epigenetic research and explain why he advocates for subconscious reprogramming as a tool for health and behavior change.
